Make the next good habit easier to start

A new routine often asks for effort at the exact moment you have the least attention to spare. Instead of planning a more impressive version, consider making the first step easier to notice and begin. NIH’s habit guidance emphasizes small, specific changes and awareness of existing patterns.
Look at the moment before the action
Choose an ordinary routine you would like to support, such as reading or putting paperwork away. Notice where you are when the opportunity usually appears and what gets in the way. Is the book in another room? Is the folder difficult to reach? Change one practical obstacle before adding reminders, tracking apps or a larger promise to yourself.
Test convenience rather than willpower
Put the relevant material somewhere useful and try the arrangement for several days. Keep the activity small enough to fit a normal day. If it still does not happen, consider whether the timing or the activity is wrong for you. An experiment can reveal that a plan needs adjustment. It should not become proof that you are incapable of change or a replacement for support with a serious health concern.
Try this, one step at a time
- Choose one small action.
- Remove one obstacle immediately before it.
- Review the setup after several ordinary days.
